Hands-On Kids English Center was founded in 2002 by April Bernhardsgrütter, a qualified teacher and school administrator (principal) from the USA, and Sibylle Klob-Treu, a Swiss business major. The goal was to provide native English speaking families as well as non-native English speaking families the opportunity to participate in activities in English together. As the Center grew, the need for activities in Swiss German became apparent and then available, which provided the basis for bilingual education for children from 2 to 7 years old.
For children, we offer such classes as:

  • Parent & Child Playgroups

  • Nursery & (Intro to) Nursery

  • Swiss German Playgroup

  • Preschool

  • K-1 Afternoons

  • Bilingual Kindergarten (E/d)

  • After-School Activities

  • School Kids Club

  • Theater Course

  • Pachi Tumbling Course

  • Holiday and Summer Programs

Our teachers and staff are excited to hear from and meet you! Please contact us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

OBS Upper School
Obersee Bilingual School Upper School will open in August 2012. As depicted in the chart below, the OBS Upper School will consist of multiple paths of education leading to the Bilingual Swiss Matura and/or the IB Diploma, High School Diploma or a Swiss secondary school certificate.

Paths of Upper School Education at Obersee Bilingual School

Lower Gymnasium and High School with Latin
The Lower Gymnasium with Latin accommodates students with superior intellectual talent as well as a flair for language. In the gymnasium, educational expectations are expanded and broadened in comparison to those of regular secondary school. This path is suited for students who are willing and ready to dedicate their time and energy to intensive learning and studying. Study in this program follows the Cantonal approved curriculum and prepares students for the Swiss Matura. In addition students can also choose to participate in the IB Diploma Programme during years 11 and 12. Alternatively, students can choose only to study the in the IB Diploma Programme.

Lower Gymnasium and High School with a concentration in Math, Science and IT
This path requires the same higher intellectual abilities but the focus lies more on the MINT subjects (Mathematics, Information Technology, Sciences and Technology) and does not include Latin as a requirement. Study in this program follows the Cantonal approved curriculum and prepares students for the Swiss Matura. In addition, students can also choose to participate in the IB Diploma Programme during years 11 and 12. Alternatively, students can choose only to study the in the IB Diploma Programme.

IB Diploma Programme
Starting in year 11, students can choose to participate in the OBS International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme at OBS and receive as a result the IB Diploma in addition to the Matura. Students can also choose to study only in the Diploma Program and not work towards the Matura.

Secondary school level
OBS will offer a bilingual secondary school with the opportunity for students to complete secondary education after grade 9 and continue with an apprenticeship and vocational education, or to continue with a 10th year of school which will prepare them for entry into the IB Diploma Programme. In either grade 8 or 9 students in secondary school will also have the opportunity to transfer to the High School and study towards the Matura and IB Diploma, as long as academic ability is sufficient.

Admission
Students who have been enrolled in OBS for at least two years, can apply to the Upper School and will be admitted to the path appropriate to their skills level without having to take a placement test. The choice of educational path will be recommended by the class teachers and school leadership based on knowledge of the student’s abilities and goals. A skills analysis (placement test) can also be carried out if desired by parents or the class teachers/school leadership if there is any doubt as to which path is best for the student. Students admitted to secondary school have the opportunity to demonstrate academic development and achievement and to therefore change their path of education.

Students new to OBS: Students who have spent fewer than two acade¬mic years at OBS will be required to participate in a skills analysis (placement test) in order to recommend academic path most suitable to the student's abilities and goals for the future. Students admitted to secondary school have the opportunity to demonstrate academic development and achievement and to therefore change their path of education.
