English Conversation Club (ECC)

The idea originated from myself and some of my students. I am an English teacher and I have a school in Root/Lu and in Stratford upon Avon/UK. We found that in Switzerland our students were not getting enough speaking practice and their English was therefore suffering. We don't have conversation lessons in our school and so we looked for another possibility for our students and anyone else who would be interested.

The result was the ECC! It is a club which meets once a month and the only rule for membership is that ONLY English is spoken. It is a non-profit organisation and it is funded by yearly membership fees. It is not linked to our school. Any monies which are left over at the end of the year are given to a good cause.

The club is primarily for non-native speakers although of course everyone is welcome. There is a minimum level of English required for entry although this is rather flexible. It is only important that everyone understands what is happening.

The evenings are a mix of quizes (amusing ones), speeches on various topics, small shows and various other activities. The emphasis is on fun and speaking.

The club is held in the Gasthof Tell which is next to the motorway exit Gisikon/Root and 5 minutes walk from Root railway station. Root is situated between Lucerne and Zug.

We have between sixty and seventy members so far and are looking for more. We are a very new club and that is why we posted the ad in xpatxchange. We are always looking for interesting and new ideas.

We have a diverse membership at present ranging from politicians to housewives and from pensioners to teenagers. We would like to continue with this philosophy as we think it makes for interesting conversations.
